In the nineteenth century it became a workhouse and then a mental hospital. Once you are in Germany hiring a car makes sense as trains go nowhere near Colditz. The bus driver can direct you although you see the castle from everywhere. My trip to Colditz was amazing. One word of warning - the hostel does food but places to eat in the town are few and are closed completely on a Monday. Vistiting Colditz Castle Museum. Well done Colditz Castle and staff. Colditz is a very beautiful and imposing castle, you can see it for miles around, with a fascinating 1,000 year history but for most British and American visitors it is the six years it was host to Prisoners of War that hold the most fascination. #FarawayFiles. Colditz (2 miles from Colditz Castle) Located in Colditz, Wasserschloss Podelwitz features a restaurant, bar, garden, and free WiFi. The hostel provides duvets, duvet-covers and sheets. The pretty central square has a couple of good cafes in which to sit and watch the world go by whilst eating an ice cream. Get off at Colditz Sportplatz and walk toward the castle through the main square. Then in the early 70s came the Colditz television series starring David McCallum. Once we had arrived we set about discovering our room and the rest of the Castle. We paid about €50 for a double including breakfast. After the war Colditz Castle lay behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany where it was used first as a prison and then as an old people’s home. They have small dorm rooms with your name on them! The bedrooms are on the first floor, but there's a good, wide lift, and I think it should be do-able even or people in wheelchairs. In the evening you can sit outside with a drink on the terrace and watch the sun go down. Slowly it has been restored as a museum, youth hostel and home to the Saxon State Music Academy.
