A Facebook page entitled ‘Save Preston Park Cycle Track’ has appeared since news of the ban was released earlier this week and already has over 4,000 likes, in an effort to prevent the historic cycle track from losing racing. One of the world’s first velodromes was built at Preston Park in Brighton, a 633 yard long track that opened in 1877. The only time racing stopped at the velodrome was during the two world wars and then again in 2015. In one such moment of reflection, I thought about the Preston Park Velodrome, the place where my sons learned to ride their bikes and we, as a family, watched countless (endless) games of cricket. Unfortunately, the opening of the new Manchester Velodrome hastened the end for the once glorious Saffron Lane track which eventually closed its doors in 1999. “They acknowledge there are still some challenges which need to be addressed and they have agreed to look into what will be required to bring the track up to standard. The velodrome itself dates back to mid to late 19th century, with the velodrome at Preston Park, Brighton in England the oldest example. “The track was closed to competitive cycling after users of the track identified, in particular, the fencing but also other aspects of the track as in need of repair. Lee Valley VeloPark – now arguably the most famous velodrome in the UK the Lee Valley VeloPark, in east London, is the track where Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Laura Trott rode to victory during the London 2012 Olympic Games. In fact, it wasn’t until the 1990s when the length of velodromes were standardised, a factor which resulted in the reason why today’s events take place on a 250 metre track, as opposed to the various lengths that were used throughout the 20th century. The velodrome was formally opened on the 30th May 1887 at a Whit Monday race meeting with races including a one mile handicap, three mile handicap, half-mile scratch and a one mile tricycle handicap. Not only is the velodrome the oldest cycle track, it is the longest at 579 metres (1,900 feet).
